The hand worth playing, November 2022
Origins
November 2022 monthly exclusive. Made during HSC exam season when I probably should have been studying. The Gambler captures one of poker’s rarest moments: quad kings losing to quad aces, a 0.4% upset that reminds us nothing is certain. Created during late nights at the bench when time was running out and choices had to be made.
Significance in the Studio’s History
This piece emerged during a crossroads moment. Logic dictated I should have been securing a degree; instead, I was in the workshop sculpting poker hands. The ring explores what happens when safe bets meet wild cards. Looking back, making this instead of studying was its own kind of gamble. The design became a meditation on risk, chance, and the courage to play your hand even when the odds seem stacked.
Design Notes
Platform signet with perfect rectangular proportions. The face depicts KKKKA versus AAAAK in precise detail, an impossible showdown frozen in silver. Dice cascade down the shoulders while a chip mark the sides. Inside, “The Gambler” flows in cursive script. Every pip and suit carved with the kind of focus that comes from choosing one thing completely over another.
Why It Returns for The Vault
Made during a time of choosing paths. Still relevant for anyone facing their own crossroads. Five days only, for those who understand that sometimes you have to play the hand you’re dealt to yourself.
